At a time where science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are crucial for innovation and economic growth, community STEM projects have become vital in fostering interest and skills among students. Our future workforce is influenced by the experiences they have now.
Active industry participation not only enhances educational outcomes but also inspires the next generation, creates career pathways, strengthens community ties, encourages diversity and promotes sustainable development and innovation.
“Empowering students with STEM skills opens up a world of opportunities. When businesses get involved, they help bridge the gap between education and industry.” Satya Nadella, CEO - Microsoft
Enhancing Educational Outcomes
Industry professionals bring a wealth of real-world experience and expertise to the table, enriching the educational content of STEM projects. They provide hands-on learning opportunities that make complex scientific concepts more tangible and engaging for students. Moreover, their knowledge ensures that the information shared is up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technological advancements, keeping the curriculum relevant and exciting.
Inspiring and Mentoring the Next Generation
Interactions with industry professionals serve as a significant source of inspiration for students. Seeing real-life role models who have succeeded in STEM fields can ignite their passion and determination. Furthermore, these professionals often become mentors, offering long-term guidance and support that helps students navigate their academic and career paths effectively.
Strengthening Community Ties
Collaboration between industries and educational institutions fosters a stronger sense of community and shared goals. Industry participation in STEM projects can address specific local challenges, making these projects more relevant and impactful. This partnership not only benefits students but also contributes to the overall well-being and development of the community.
Examples
One example is the collaboration between COMET and local industries on the Curious Minds and WeSTEM projects. These initiatives have engaged thousands of young people in hands-on STEM activities, demonstrating the profound impact of industry involvement. Another successful project is the partnership with SheSharp, where industry professionals mentor high school girls, inspiring them to pursue careers in technology and engineering.
Get Your Business Involved
Over the 10 years STEM Alliance has been involved in community activated STEM projects, the question we get asked more than any other is: ”How do we get involved?"
Many businesses have taken part in careers days, and whilst these have their place, those involved sense it is a light touch. Students who know they want to be a scientist or engineer likely find things interesting; those who have no idea enjoy the goodie bags and bowls of lollies. It is not until you give these students hands-on experiences that the lights go on!
STEM Alliance aligns businesses with communities. We define the outcomes your business wants to achieve, and we match this with the outcomes of the different community projects looking for industry engagement. Regardless of how much time, money and/or resource you have, there is no shortage of engagement activities.
Making sure it is the right one is what STEM Alliance does.
